A deputy is a warrior who is second in command to the leader. They aid him/her in their tasks and take over the position of leader when the current leader dies or retires. When the leader is ill or unable to perform their duties, the deputy takes over for them until they recover, also taking their leader's place at gatherings if they can't attend.

Generally when a leader appoints a new deputy it is because of the death of the previous deputy. In this case, the ceremony usually goes like this:

Leader: "I say these words before the body of (name of deputy), that the spirits of our warrior ancestors may hear and approve of my choice. The new deputy of (name of Clan) will be (name of warrior)!"
